Woodland Hills Dentures – Southern Cal Smiles

If you have badly damaged or missing teeth, dentures may be a great dental solution for you. Dentures are a common treatment for individuals of any age (not just the elderly) who have a lost most or all of their teeth. Dentures are removable appliances that sit on top of the gums and restore the appearance and function of a full set of teeth. Crafted from fine-quality materials, dentures improve your smile and overall facial appearance. Dr. Susan Fredericks fits and places dentures at her Woodland Hills dental practice.

What Are Dentures?

Dentures are a type of prosthesis composed of pink acrylic “gum” material that supports a set of artificial teeth. There are several different kinds of dentures available, including the following:

  • Full dentures to replace an entire upper or lower arch of teeth.
  • Partial dentures that fit in between remaining teeth.
  • Overdentures, or implant-supported dentures, that are attached to two dental implant posts. The posts are placed in your jawbone and provide enhanced stability to the denture.

Denture Fitting and Placement: What to Expect

Dr. Fredericks will first examine your gums and the supporting bone structure to help her develop a treatment plan suited to your needs. If you have any remaining teeth, you may choose to have a partial denture placed to fit in between the remaining teeth, or Dr. Fredericks may extract them and place a complete denture.

Gums shrink as a result of tooth loss, and tooth loss is a long process (month or years). If you have a few teeth extracted to prepare for dentures, the prosthetic may need to be adjusted at some point to accommodate your changing gums and underlying bone structure. Dr. Fredericks can coordinate “relining” your dentures to make them more functional and comfortable in your mouth.
